‘‘I don’t believe stores should stock clothes below or above a certain weight. They should be made to feel uncomfortable when they go in and can’t find a size.’’
I am completely shocked and appalled by the comment made above by so-called celebrity and ‘’pop star’’ Jamelia. How dare she publicly humiliate and degrade those of us who struggle with weight, how dare she suggest that plus sized women do not deserve to wear clothes of their own choice. I’m flabbergasted that women like her are allowed to voice an opinion on something that they clearly DO NOT understand. Young girls and women are already battling with body image around the globe and then they hear this utter garbage and the battle is almost lost, many girls succumbing to low self esteem issues which could potentially develop into eating disorders.
Already a girl has injured herself from taking slimming/diet pills from pressure to fit in, and then we get airheads like Jamelia offering idiotic and dangerous advice like that.
I don’t understand, in this century, why body image is such a negative and frowned upon subject. Why is it so taboo to be over a size 12? As I keep saying, women should be celebrated for their character, their strength and inner AND outer beauty. Martin Luther King said it best, ‘’judge by the content of their character.’’
This is not a losing battle, Jamelia’s opinions are becoming a minority now. More and more women are beginning to accept and love themselves for who and what they are, and those girls who do take her comments on board, not all is lost, with a bit of encouragement and love, hopefully you will too realise just how wonderful and beautiful you are.
Don’t take my word for it, take action, tell yourself that you are beautiful; every day until you wake up one morning, smile and whisper it to yourself and believe it.
